Use a food journal to learn how to lose weight

Losing weight is an activity that requires a person's full attention. Too often we decide ourselves that losing weight will "just happen." The reality is that we have to learn how to lose weight effectively.

Even before developing a weight loss plan, it's important to become more aware of what we eat, how much we eat, and some of the pressures that spur us to "emotional eating." A way to keep track of all these factors is by using a food journal to learn how to lose weight.

A food journal is an excellent tool that can be a truly eye-opening experience. Few people are really aware of how much they eat and how unhealthy some of the foods they eat truly are. The term "empty calories" was coined for describe foods that are high in calories, but low in nutrition. Foods such as these include popular snacks such as potato chips, sodas and candy.

In contrast, "nutrient dense" is the term given to healthy foods that carry high levels of proteins, carbohydrates, essential fats, vitamins, minerals and water in relation to their amount of calories. Foods such as vegetables and fruits, whole grains and nuts, low-fat dairy, lean meats and poultry and monounsaturated fats are all considered nutrient dense. These foods make up a healthy eating plan that's an essential part of how to lose weight fast.

In fact, many people are truly shocked when they began to count up the calories in their daily intake as recorded in a food journal. That's because to be truly accurate regarding food intake, a person must record everything that goes into his or her mouth each day. Every pat of butter on a dinner roll, every spoonful of sugar in a cup of coffee, even a stick of chewing gum must be counted. Keeping an accurate food journal also requires recording what some nutritionists call the BLTs ' the "bites, licks and tastes" of foods that may seem like small portions, but pack a big calorie wallop.

A food journal, if kept accurately, helps a person learn just how many calories he or she consumes in a typical day. It's also important to record the size and number of portions eaten, because those count too when learning how to lose weight. The size and number of portions determines how many calories are consumed. Correct portions are a lot smaller than most people assume.

Once a person has a better sense of how much they're eating, and what kinds of foods they're eating, it becomes easier to identify the "empty calorie" foods and eliminate them from an eating plan. This tactic will jump-start a plan on how to lose weight fast. The next step is develop an eating plan of healthy foods that will provide nutrition and satisfy hunger while creating the calorie deficit that results in weight loss. There are many available resources to help with meal planning that includes lots of nutrient dense foods that still contribute to weight loss.

Using a food journal will definitely help in learning how to lose weight most effectively.
